Campaign Contributions by Occupation

Data from Fundrace 2008 at the Huffington Post. I swear, I didn’t select for specific occupations. And I don’t know what their method of data collection is so the results might be skewed. Especially considering that HuffPo is essentially a liberal blog.

I also realize that none of this really means anything to me, as an Indian citizen, but I thought it was interesting to see exactly what the proportions were of people donating and money donated to each party from specific occupations. Mostly because I thought that might also have something to do with their intelligence, education, social background and so forth. The results in some cases are quite glaring. That calculation was my own, by the way, so if I’ve made division mistakes, don’t blame HuffPo.

Legend : (10P,5M) means 10 times as many people donated to democrats as republicans and 5 times as much money was donated to the democrats as to the republicans

$1,188,039 was given by people who identified their occupation as “Actor“.
$56,488 from 45 people to Republicans
$1,131,551 from 702 people to Democrats
15.6P,20.03M$12,940,520 was given by people who identified their occupation as “CEO“.
$2,991,750 from 1,516 people to Republicans
$9,948,770 from 4,394 people to Democrats
2.898P,3.3M

$771,330 was given by people who identified their occupation as “Author“.
$200,229 from 135 people to Republicans
$571,101 from 366 people to Democrats
2.7P,2.85M

$2,018,033 was given by people who identified their occupation as “Farmer“.
$1,340,937 from 1,990 people to Republicans
$677,096 from 680 people to Democrats
0.34P,0.5M

$92,573 was given by people who identified their occupation as “Priest“.
$35,351 from 51 people to Republicans
$57,222 from 99 people to Democrats
1.94P,1.6M
(Surprising, I know. Preachers prefer republicans, though, by about the opposite ratio, but there were only about 8 total so I omitted.)

$353,475 was given by people who identified their occupation as “Journalist“.
$33,900 from 38 people to Republicans
$319,575 from 360 people to Democrats
9.47P,9.67M

$9,495,436 was given by people who identified their occupation as “Professor“.
$812,462 from 982 people to Republicans
$8,682,974 from 11,036 people to Democrats
11.2P,10.69M
(YES, 10 to 1!)

$1,441,843 was given by people who identified their occupation as “Self-employed“.
$853,721 from 863 people to Republicans
$588,122 from 656 people to Democrats
0.76P,0.69M
(Clearly, this is not a complete list. I just gave up searching)

$962,118 was given by people who identified their occupation as “Programmer“.
$341,821 from 472 people to Republicans
$620,297 from 952 people to Democrats
2.01P,1.82M
(Which makes sense, because programmers as a GROUP don’t really need to care about anything besides technological freedoms, which I suppose the Democrats are better on)

$5,816,552 was given by people who identified their occupation as “Teacher“.
$1,484,637 from 1,914 people to Republicans
$4,331,915 from 7,272 people to Democrats
3.8P,2.92M

$1,366,975 was given by people who identified their occupation as “Scientist“.
$209,391 from 251 people to Republicans
$1,157,584 from 1,549 people to Democrats
6.17P,5.53M
(Far,far lower than expected!!!)

$33,624 was given by people who identified their occupation as “factory worker“.
$17,537 from 48 people to Republicans
$16,087 from 39 people to Democrats
0.81P,0.94M

I know the obvious omission is the vast number of blue-collar workers, of whom there must be far more who donated than the paltry number in the “factory worker” and “farmer”(of which the latter can be both blue and white, I guess) categories. Honestly, I just didn’t know what label would give me a single group, and I’m not nearly so unoccupied as to sit here and search for all the million little jobs and collate them.Oh, and after the surprisingly good experience with Dazed and Confused, I finally saw The Truman Show. Will post about that soon.
